
Matthew trained at the Royal Northern College of Music and currently works as a London based soloist, session singer and opera chorister. He has sung with a number of highly acclaimed opera companies including Opera Holland Park, Grange Park Opera, The Royal Opera, Opera Rara, Northern Ireland Opera, Buxton Festival Opera & Aldeburgh Festival Opera.
Matthew has had extensive experience singing with a number of the UK's leading vocal consorts including Yorkshire Bach Choir, Blossom Street Singers, Philharmonia Chorus & the London Philharmonic Choir. He also regularly performs with the A cappella quartet Barbershop-O-Gram & also Pitch Perfect Voices who perform across the UK and have made numerous appearances and recordings for television and radio.
Opera recording highlights with Opera Rara include Donzetti's 'L'esule di Roma' (c. Carlo Rizzi with Britten Sinfonia) which was nominated for Best Opera Recording 2024 by the International Opera Awards & Offenbach's 'La Princesse de Trebizonde'' (c. Paul Daniel with London Philharmonic Orchestra) which was awarded Opera Recording of the Year 2024 by Opus Klassik Awards as well as Best Opera Recording 2024 by Oper! Awards. Other notable recordings with Opera Rara include Leoncavallo's 'Zingari' (c. Carlo Rizzi with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Puccini's 'Le Villi' & Donizetti's 'Il Paria' (c. Sir Mark Elder with LPO & Britten Sinfonia). Other recordings include Christopher Tin's album 'To Shiver the Sky' with the Royal Opera House chorus & RPO.
Opera chorus highlights at Opera Holland Park with City of London Sinfonia include Pagliacci, The Queen of Spades, Iris, Le Villi, Isabeau, Iolanta, Yeomen of the Guard, Ruddigore, HMS Pinafore, L'amico Fritz, La Boheme, L'arlesiana, The Cunning little Vixen, Zaza and Kat'a Kabanova. Other projects with Opera Holland Park have included 'Les Noces' at Sadlers Wells in collaboration with English National Ballet & 'The Rakes Progress' (c. Barbara Hannigan with the Ludwig Orchestra) at the Aldeburgh Festival. Other chorus credits include 'Turandot' at Northern Ireland Opera with the Ulster Orchestra & 'Rigoletto' at Bury Court Opera with Southbank Sinfonia.
Chorus highlights at Grange Park Opera with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra include Peter Grimes, Queen of Spades, Fortunio, Madama Butterfly, Idomeneo, The Love for Three Oranges and Tosca. Matthew was also awarded the Grange Park Opera young artist scholarship..
Roles sung at Opera Holland Park include Vegliardo (Isabeau), Drinker (Margot la Rouge) and also the cover for Henezo (L'amico Fritz). He sung the role of Schaunard (La Boheme) with Opera Up Close whose award winning production went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production. Other roles have included Fanshaw/Raimbaud (Count Ory) & Don Inigo Gomez (L'heure espagnole) with Opera Alegria at London's Grimeborn Opera Festival, Frank (Die Fledermaus) with Fulham Opera, Hobson (Peter Grimes) with the Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra & Baron (La Traviata) with Merry Opera, whose production toured to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in collaboration with Petaling Jaya Arts.
Alongside performing, Matthew leads a busy schedule of peripatetic teaching of singing and piano across London. He currently teaches at Chigwell School, Sebright Primary School & St. Stephen's School Shepherd's Bush (Pelican Music). In addition to his teaching work, he also conducts the Camberwell Community Choir .
